Photocatalysts (currently believed to be widely used for TiO2) have a unique band structure that differs from metals or insulating materials, with a bandgap between the valence band and the conduction band. When light with photon energy above the absorption threshold of the photocatalyst irradiates the photocatalyst, the valence charge of the photocatalyst undergoes an interband transition from the valence band to the conduction band, resulting in the generation of photo induced electrons (e -) and holes (h+). At this time, the dissolved oxygen adsorbed on the surface of the photocatalyst (usually in the form of nanoparticles) captures electrons to form active oxygen ions, while the holes oxidize the hydroxide ions and water adsorbed on the catalyst surface into hydroxyl radicals. And reactive oxygen species and hydroxyl radicals have strong oxidizing properties, which can oxidize and destroy the vast majority of organic matter, and even decompose some inorganic substances, thereby degrading pollutants near the catalyst surface.
The gas-solid multiphase photocatalytic reaction process can be expressed as:
(1) The generation of photo induced electrons and holes;
(2) Adsorption of O2, H2O, and organic compounds on the catalyst surface;
(3) The generation of oxidants;
(4) Catalytic decomposition of organic compounds and other steps. The necessary conditions for photocatalytic conversion are the photocatalyst and a certain level of light exposure.
