The drum contains 8 or 10 (depending on the model size) small extruder barrels, parallel to the main screw shaft. In the small barrel is the "satellite" screw, which is driven by the ring gear in the main barrel. When the "satellite" screw rotates around the screw axis, it is in the opposite direction to the main screw. This asymmetric operation design can increase the surface exchange of polymer melt. Meanwhile, avoid the meshing issues in traditional multi axis or multi screw designs.

Due to its extremely high surface area exchange rate, the MRS extruder can provide excellent transfer in most cases, with a vacuum of only 30 mbar. This allows for the use of simpler and more robust water ring pumps, reducing daily maintenance at least. Under normal circumstances, the MRS extruder operates with a 25mbar low maintenance liquid ring vacuum system in standard applications, through enhanced surface area exchange combined with deeper vacuum (such as 0.5-2mbar).
