In order to further grasp the safety and health status of underwater foundations of highway bridges, on September 8th, underwater inspection units conducted disease surveys on some underwater structures and pier foundations of bridges, and explored and tested underwater pile foundations of waterway bridges to understand the influence of factors such as river water level rise and fall, erosion, and corrosion changes on underwater bridge pile foundations.


Inspect underwater structures such as bridge piers and pile foundations. The "physical examination" report of the bridge pier will clarify whether the bridge is "sick" and what the "condition" is, providing data for the comprehensive maintenance and upkeep of the bridge.
It is understood that the underwater pile foundation of a bridge is the main load-bearing part of the bridge and belongs to concealed engineering. Its quality directly affects whether the bridge can be used safely. Three bridges were selected for underwater pile foundation testing based on their service life and the degree of pier erosion. Due to the special underwater environment, it is not easy to "see a doctor" for pile foundations. For this underwater pile foundation inspection, the method of "frogman" diving and underwater video recording was used. At the inspection site, the "frogman" carried underwater measuring rulers and other tools to swim to the bridge pile foundation, and recorded in detail the location and quantity of pile foundation defects; Using underwater camera technology to record the bridge pile foundation and synchronously transmit it to the shore engineer for identification; Use sonar to measure the riverbed upstream and downstream of the bridge, and determine whether there is any displacement of the riverbed.

At the inspection site, frogmen wearing diving suits jumped into the water with underwater detectors, surrounded the bridge piers, and used the underwater cameras of the detectors to inspect the appearance of the underwater structure of the bridge piers and abutments, as well as the erosion of the underwater riverbed at the bridge location. At the same time, another staff member on board carefully observed the images transmitted by the underwater camera of the detector in front of the display device, examining the underwater foundation diseases. Subsequently, the frogman used an ultrasonic depth gauge to detect the free length and effective burial depth of the bridge piers in water, in order to determine the safety and reliability of the bridge foundation in water.

Due to the influence of the working environment, such as riverbed erosion during flood season, sewage erosion, drifting objects and ship collisions, inherent deficiencies of piers and pile foundations, and the alternation of dry and wet caused by high and low water levels during flood season, the structural degradation degree and speed of underwater bridge piers and abutments are more severe than those on land. Through frogman diving inspection, the exposure of bridge foundations can be investigated to determine whether there are cracks, exposed reinforcement, peeling, voids, and necking in the underwater structure of the bridge. After the inspection is completed, the staff will handle the underwater foundation diseases found during the inspection.
The problem of underwater pile foundation is relatively hidden and difficult to detect in a timely manner during daily safety inspections. This centralized inspection will help achieve early detection and disposal of bridge safety issues, thereby reducing safety hazards and lowering maintenance costs.
The three bridges sampled this time have a total of 128 pile foundations, which are in good technical condition, with only 6 slightly damaged. We will issue a 'physical examination report' for each bridge based on the collected image data, providing accurate data support for the maintenance and repair of the bridge in the future
