On August 1st, 2025,GB/T 15171-2025 "Test Method for Sealing Performance of Packaging Components"andGB/T 17344-2025 "Test Method for Airtightness of Packaging Containers"Both will be officially implemented on February 1, 2026, replacing GB/T 15171-1994 "Test Method for Sealing Performance of Flexible Packaging" and GB/T 17344-1998 "Test Method for Airtightness of Packaging Containers". Let's take a look at the main technical changes that have occurred in the new version of the standard compared to the alternative version.

1 GB/T 15171-2025

Test Method for Sealing Performance of Packaging Components


With the development of the packaging industry and changes in market demand, packaging sealing testing technology is also constantly evolving. The traditional sealing testing method (negative pressure bubble method) has low sensitivity, cannot detect small leaks, and is easily affected by environmental factors such as water temperature and bubble surface tension, which can no longer meet the requirements of packaging sealing testing. The biggest change in the 25th version of the standard is the retention of method one, negative pressure bubble method (described as underwater bubble method in the 25th version), and the addition ofVacuum attenuation methodExpand the scope of application of the standard from a single flexible packaging toSoft packaging, semi-rigid packaging, rigid packagingThe full range of products (excluding vacuum packaging) effectively expands the scope of standard application.
(1) Underwater bubble method

Test principle: Place the sample in a vacuum chamber containing test water, evacuate the chamber to create a pressure difference between the inside and outside of the sample, observe the escape of gas inside the sample and the infiltration of test water into the sample to determine the sealing performance of the sample. This method is suitable for testing the sealing performance of packaging materials that have no significant effect on the outer layer material of the packaging with experimental water.

The 25th edition of the standard retains the underwater bubble method and has revised its content, with the main changes as follows:

(2) Vacuum attenuation method
Testing principle: Place the sample in the testing chamber, evacuate the testing chamber to create a pressure difference between the inside and outside of the sample, and monitor the change in the vacuum degree of the testing chamber through a pressure sensor to determine the sealing performance of the sample. This method is suitable for testing the sealing performance of various non vacuum packaging components such as flexible packaging and rigid packaging.
In addition to GB/T 15171, both domestic and foreign standards, specifications, and other documents include vacuum attenuation method sealing test, such as ASTM F2338-24《Standard Test Method For Nondestructive Detection Of Leaks In Packages By Vacuum Decay Method》、 The pharmaceutical industry standards YY/T 0681.18-2020 "Test Methods for Aseptic Medical Device Packaging Part 18: Non destructive Testing of Packaging Leakage by Vacuum Attenuation Method" and the "Technical Guidelines for Sealing Research of Chemical Drug Injection Packaging Systems (Trial)" issued by the Drug Evaluation Center of the National Medical Products Administration. Compared to the underwater bubble method,Vacuum attenuation methodAs a non-destructive quantitative measurement method, it provides higher sensitivity and accuracy. This method detects leaks by monitoring changes in pressure in the chamber, and can accurately detect leakage channels of 3 μ m or more. Some instruments can even achieve a sensitivity of 1 μ m. The vacuum attenuation method is not only applicable to soft, hard, and semi-rigid packaging, but also can more accurately evaluate the sealing integrity of packaging, and hasNon destructive, non-destructive, no need for sample preparationWaiting for advantages.

This standard evaluates the sealing performance of packaging based on the magnitude of vacuum attenuation rate, and provides specific requirements for testing principles, samples, instruments, sample state adjustment and testing conditions, testing steps, testing results, and testing reports.

The release of the 25th edition of the standard has a positive significance for the quality control and technological progress of China's packaging industry. It can more effectively ensure the safety of product transportation and promote the standardized development of the industry.

2、 GB/T 17344-2025 Packaging

Test method for airtightness of packaging containers


GB/T 17334-2025 mainly introduces the airtightness test method for packaging containers, which is applicable to fields such as food, medicine, and chemical engineeringAir tightness characteristics of transportation packaging containersTesting to verify whether the container can effectively isolate external air from entering or prevent internal substances from escaping, ensuring the quality and safety of the contents in the container.

Compared to the 1998 version, the main changes are as follows:
