What are the precautions for large-diameter PE pipe crushers
Date: 2025-08-11Read: 12

The large-diameter PE pipe (polyethylene pipe) crusher is a specialized equipment used for processing or recycling large-diameter PE pipes. Its working process involves high-strength mechanical crushing, material transportation, and safety protection. Due to the high toughness and large diameter (usually ≥ 300mm) of PE pipe material, it is prone to entanglement, jamming, or equipment overload during crushing. Therefore, the following precautions must be strictly followed during operation to ensure safe and efficient operation of the equipment and extend its service life:

1、 Equipment selection and installation precautions

  1. Match crushing ability
    • Select the crusher model based on the diameter, wall thickness, and material (such as HDPE or LDPE) of the PE pipe to ensure that the crushing chamber size, cutter shaft speed, and torque meet the requirements.
    • exampleTo crush HDPE pipes with a diameter of 500mm and a wall thickness of 20mm, a heavy-duty crusher with a blade roller diameter of ≥ 600mm and a power of ≥ 75kW should be selected.
  2. Stable installation foundation
    • The equipment needs to be installed on a concrete foundation, with a foundation thickness of ≥ 1/5 of the equipment weight (such as a 1-meter-thick foundation for 5-ton equipment) to reduce vibration.
    • Use anchor bolts to fix the equipment, and the bolt specifications should match the equipment base holes (such as M24 bolts), and regularly check the tightening situation.
  3. Reserved maintenance space
    • At least 1 meter of operating space should be reserved around the equipment to facilitate tool replacement, cleaning of debris, and daily maintenance.
    • A protective fence (height ≥ 1.2 meters) should be installed above the feed inlet of the crusher to prevent materials from falling and injuring people.

2、 Preparation before operation

  1. Material pretreatment
    • remove impuritiesCheck if there are any hard objects such as metal, sand, etc. inside the PE pipe to avoid damaging the cutting tools or jamming the equipment.
    • Cut into sectionsPre cut ultra long pipelines (such as>3 meters) and shorten them to the maximum length allowed by the crusher (usually ≤ 1.5 meters).
    • Control humidityIf the moisture content of the material is greater than 10%, it needs to be dried first (such as natural air drying or using a dryer) to prevent tool adhesion.
  2. Equipment inspection
    • Tool ConditionCheck whether the blade is worn, broken or loose. If the wear exceeds 1/3 of the original thickness, it needs to be replaced (such as a blade with an original thickness of 20mm, the remaining thickness must be ≥ 13mm).
    • lubrication systemConfirm that the oil level in the reducer, bearings, and other parts is normal (the oil gauge scale is between 1/2 and 2/3), and that the oil is not emulsified or deteriorated.
    • Electrical systemCheck if the motor wiring is secure, the grounding resistance is ≤ 4 Ω, and there is no moisture or dust accumulation inside the control cabinet.
  3. No-load trial run
    • After starting the equipment, run it without load for 5-10 minutes and observe whether the knife shaft rotates smoothly without any abnormal noise. The bearing temperature should be ≤ 65 ℃.
    • Check if the hydraulic system (if any) has normal pressure (usually 10-16MPa) and no leakage.

3、 Key precautions during operation

  1. Uniform feeding
    • Avoid investing too much material at once to prevent jamming or overload. It is recommended to use segmented feeding, with each feeding not exceeding 70% of the crushing chamber volume.
    • exampleWhen crushing PE pipes with a diameter of 400mm, a maximum of 2 pipes (total length ≤ 1 meter) can be inserted each time.
  2. Control the crushing particle size
    • Adjust the mesh size according to the subsequent process requirements (such as using a mesh size of 10-20mm when producing recycled particles) to ensure uniform discharge.
    • If the discharge particles are found to be too large, it may be due to screen blockage or tool wear, and the machine should be stopped immediately for cleaning or replacement.
  3. Monitoring equipment status
    • current monitoringObserve the motor load through an ammeter, and during normal operation, the current should be ≤ 90% of the rated value. If the current suddenly increases by more than 10%, there may be material jamming or tool damage, and the machine should be stopped immediately for inspection.
    • Temperature monitoringRegularly measure the temperature of bearings and motor casings with an infrared thermometer. If it exceeds 80 ℃, the machine should be shut down for cooling.
    • Vibration MonitoringIf the vibration of the equipment intensifies (such as vibration value>5mm/s), it may be due to unbalanced blade shaft or loose foundation, and needs to be recalibrated or reinforced.
  4. emergency response
    • Card processingIf material jamming occurs, it is strictly prohibited to clean it directly by hand. The machine should be stopped first and the power should be cut off. Special tools (such as long handled hooks) should be used to remove the material.
    • overload protectionEnsure that the equipment is equipped with thermal relays or torque limiters that automatically shut down when the load exceeds the rated value to prevent motor burnout.

4、 Safety protection measures

  1. personal protection
    • Operators are required to wear safety helmets, cut resistant gloves, goggles, and dust masks to prevent material splashing or dust inhalation.
    • Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry such as necklaces to avoid getting caught up in rotating parts.
  2. Equipment Protection
    • A protective cover (made of Q235 steel plate with a thickness of ≥ 3mm) should be installed at the feed inlet of the crusher to prevent personnel from accidentally touching the blade shaft.
    • Transmission components (such as pulleys and couplings) need to be equipped with protective nets (aperture ≤ 10mm) to avoid contact and injury.
  3. Fire and explosion prevention
    • When the PE pipe is broken, static electricity may be generated. The equipment needs to be reliably grounded (grounding resistance ≤ 4 Ω) and equipped with a fire extinguisher (such as a dry powder fire extinguisher).
    • It is prohibited to stack flammable materials around the equipment, and the work area must maintain good ventilation.
